The best DNA replication animation I've ever seen...
And as a science teacher, I've seen a lot!
Of all the animations of DNA replication I’ve seen, this is the one I pictured when we learned that Gilbert’s dilated cardiomyopathy was ultimately due to a genetic mutation.
I think this one stuck with me because the visual framing gives the viewer a clear “big picture” reference for the process, while at the same time the shapes used for the interacting components emphasize the complexity of these tiny molecular interactions.
Barth syndrome is caused by a random mutation (an error in DNA replication) in one gene (a section of DNA) called the TAZ gene. While we can’t treat the gene, we can treat the mitochondrial function that this gene is supposed to ultimately support (see my “5 Levels of Difficulty” post for more explanation).
